One tree hill（ワンツリーヒル）はCornwall Park（コーンウォールパーク）のすぐ隣にあります。

ワンツリーヒルは標高182ｍの死火山です。ワンツリーヒルの頂上にはかつて、名前の由来だったOne Tree＝一本の大きな木が立っていました。しかしマオリの活動家によって切り倒されてしまいました。頂上の木は白人支配の象徴だという理由だそうです。
One Tree Hill is a 182-metre volcanic peak in Auckland. One Tree Hill was named after the lone pine that once stood near the monument at the summit. The original tree, a sacred totara, was cut down by settlers for firewood and replaced with a pine tree.



私がここに訪れた日は頂上まで車で登れましたが、現在は乗り入れ禁止になっています。丘の上に立つ記念碑に向かって登っていきましょう。

記念碑です。記念碑をぐるりと一周すれば360度の素晴らしい景色が見られます。

現在はワンツリーヒルには木はありませんが、柵の中には3本のトタラと6本のポフツカワの苗木が植えられ、数年かけてどの木が丘の上の環境に馴染むのか様子を見て、最終的には1本の木が残され、新たなワンツリーとなるそうです。
Auckland council planted 9 trees and vegetation to replace the tree that was destroyed. The fence protents the new trees.


ここは夕焼けが綺麗なので、サンセットに合わせて来るのもいいと思います。
